Chicago Drum Show Floor tour ONE

On the Floor

The three videos to the left are the first ones I shot when I arrived at the show. I was overwhelmed yet excited to be there.

This first batch of videos are me just getting a feel for the floor plan. I knew that I was there for two full days and would come back and get more footage.

I hope you get a feel for the show's atmosphere as it really was electric!

I was told by many that this show was the best show by far.

More from the floor on Sunday
More from Sunday...

Two videos on the left...I got a bit more from the floor on Sunday...tried to capture the feeling and mood of a huge hall filled with drummers!

During the middle of the day, the folks running the event spoke over the P.A. system and asked if we could have a few moments of silence while we honored the life and passing of William F. Ludwig Sr. or "The Chief." "Hail to the Chief" was played overhead...

In some way I'm sure we all felt something...I know I did...my first pair of sticks and practice pad were made by this man's company...thank you, Mr. Ludwig...you had an impact on my life.

Tribute to W.F. Ludwig...the "Chief"

Master Teacher Billy Ward held a Master Class on Saturday, the 17th of May, 2008.

There was around 8 or 9 of us and speaking for myself, it was a very intimate and personal happening.
Certainly like nothing I had ever experienced before...to have such a great player right in the room...at our beck and call was fantastic!
I came away with many new ideas that I could apply to my playing immediately.

I am so very happy I made the trip down from Cheese-land to be a part of it!

Thanks Billy...now about that car you want to sell me...

A touch of Billy's Master Class
It's Billy-Time...

Now starts the videos of Billy.

I didn't run much video in the class simply because I felt it would be rude and intrusive...but my desire to get something down finally won out.

The Master Class was more than just an eye opener for me...it has made me aware of time, technique, my limitations, my goals...bunches of things that have all made me a better drummer...all within a short time spent with Master Teacher, Billy.

ALL of us in that room changed that day...

Later, Billy and I reflected on the class and he told me he hoped that we "got his messages..."

We did, Billy...we did.

In the Video "Billy hits the floor," I got a chance to watch Billy's love and excitement for gear.
Those who recognized Billy stopped him to say hello...Billy was warm and sincere with everyone...he gave his time freely.

Billy in the "Green Room."
Billy in the "Green Room"

Billy in the "Green Room" along with the Master Class gave me an idea as to the playful nature of this man. I hadn't really spoke to Billy yet so I was trying to be respectful of his time alone...I asked Billy if he would like to be alone in the room and he said "no...hang with me." Immediatly put me at ease.

Here Billy was messin' round with his DeeDubs and talking with some of the venue folks...
I got a chance to view these drums up close...beautiful...what can I say? If I didn't play TRICK, I would play DW...no doubt.

That was the start of me really digging this groovy guy...no weirdness meant here, Billy...it's just that you're a pretty cool human being.

Matt Wilson "Body & Soul."
Matt Wilson - "Body & Soul"

This is a painfully too short video of Matt Wilson's performance of "Body and Soul."

It wasn't until way too late that I realized I had a video camera in my hand...and could have been recording this beautifully played piece of music...

Oh well...I got what I could...and it was pretty much the end of it...

Matt was very nice and really dug Billy's clinic.
