Bill Bruford
Bill Bruford has been playing this type of symmetrical setup probably longer than anyone and could arguably be considered one of the pioneers of the concept.

Mr. Bruford grew up with jazz. As an amateur drummer in the 1960s, and after a handful of lessons from Lou Pocock of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he began his professional career in 1968. He was a guiding light in the so-called British "Art Rock" movement, touring internationally with Yes and King Crimson from 1968-74. There then followed several years spent observing and participating in the music making processes of, among others, Gong, National Health, Genesis and U.K., until Mr. Bruford felt ready to write and perform his own music with his own band "Bruford," recording four albums from 1977-80.

Joe Babiak
Joe Babiak has been playing drums since 1994.
Because of his previous musical training, the drums came very natural to him. This is an ongoing art form about which Joe is very passionate and constantly strives to improve. He has played drums in numerous groups including styles such as punk, ska, pop, alternative rock, electronica, jazz, fusion, funk, heavy metal, progressive rock, folk, and musical theater. With years of live and studio experience, Joe takes great pride in being very well versed in many genres. His group, Parallel Mind, was signed to Unicorn Records of Canada in early 2005. Their album, Colossus ADEA, beautifully demonstrates Joe's proficient abilities on the drums.

In December 2002, Joe joined guitar extraordinaire, Michael Angelo Batio, for a very successful tour in Asia . Since then he has recorded, performed live, and appeared in music videos with Michael. In the spring of 2006, Joe joined the Chicago based band, Kill Hannah, for a 5 month national tour in support of the group's second album release with Atlantic Records.

What they are saying about my friend Mark!

Drum! Magazine; "New Blood," May 2007 Mark Christianson

Sometimes it’s as if a particular drummer and a particular band were destined for each other. We all know the legendary match-ups (Bonham/Zeppelin, Mitchell/Hendrix, Pear/Rush). But it can happen on a small scale too. That’s why, when The Squid heard The Mark laying his foundation for the ambient electro-rock explorations of Analog Missionary, it seemed as if the stars had aligned (as they sometimes do even for the general rabble of aspiring talent). It doesn’t hurt that The Mark’s sweet hybrid Tama Granstar/Roland V-drum setup provides the perfect electronic/acoustic rhythmic cocktail for the band’s music. Laying down an unrelenting backdrop of roiling V-toms and shimmering acoustic cymbals, The Mark’s clean execution and driving rhythms keep the sometimes-wavering attention of Analog Missionary focused on the mission at hand. Sticking since he was seven years old, The Mark isn’t even close to finished exploring the worlds of “electronic triggers, polyrhythmic layering, and nonlinear song formats.” Talent and innovation are always in demand, but The Mark’s special blend must have Analog Missionary singing “hallelujah.”

The drummer is an amazing percussionist. Face it: with drummers, local and regional: there's good and there's Neil-Peart-good. This guy is Neil-Peart-good and from here on out, Mark will always make my Top-10 lists of drummers alongside Neil Peart, Danny Carey and Bill Bruford.

Gothic Beauty Magazine, Issue 18, Fall 2005

When you first hear Analog Missionary, take note, you are NOT listening to Kate Bush on the lead vocal track. In a genre all their own (ambient Prog-Rock), this band has pieces of U2, Rush, Peter Gabriel, and Kate Bush written all over them. It’s one of the best albums I’ve heard in a long, long time. The pieces are so brilliant and diverse there is something for absolutely everyone. It only took one pass through the album to make me an instant fan, and it will probably be the same for you. Check them out. (Poseidon)

Splash! Music review by Nick Rupert ~Music/Entertainment

Mark was able to conjure a wide palette of ethnic percussion tones from his digital drum kit. Several of Analog Missionary’s arrangements featured his somersaulting tom-tom beats overlaid with hypnotic, haunting guitar or keyboard parts. With the addition of Anstrom‘s dynamic vocals and deep, cryptic lyrics, the music was refreshingly original.

Says Ryan:
"The driving factor behind my setup is comfort. Intuitively, crossing my hands to play in the "traditional" fashion never made sense and was ultimately not very comfortable to me. I've been inspired by Bill Bruford's configuration for many years, but for reasons unknown resisted taking the plunge. I finally took the plunge about a year ago, buying a DW remote/cable hi-hat, and haven't looked back since!

Having the hi hats in the 12:00 position allows me access to open-handed playing (with either hand leading) plus frees my left hand to explore different patterns not previously available. This set up has inspired me musically and my comfort level has increased dramatically."

I wish to thank Mr. Culberson for giving me permission to add him to the site.
