Colville National Forest offers perfect place to train Air Force recruits how to survive

In the far Northwest of America, winter can be unforgiving. That’s why the Colville National is the perfect place to train the military.

“If something bad happens, if a plane goes down, if we hear about a pilot being alone in the middle of Africa or wherever it may be in the world, we want them to have the best chance of survival,” said SERE Specialist, Senior Airman Carlos Sanchez. “Anyone who’s up in the air goes through this course as well as special operations airmen.”

The training Sanchez is referring to is called SERE, which stands for survival, evasion, resistance, and escape.

“Anyone who’s in danger at some point, whether in their mission or career, they may be alone somewhere where they need to survive. They need to come through this course,” said Sanchez. “We need to make sure they’re prepared if the worst happens so they can get home safely.”

The training takes place over the course of five days. Recruits must learn how to survive in the steep mountain terrain of the Colville National Forest. This time of the year it’s snowing, and for many of the recruits, it’s an alien world.

“This is probably the first time I’ve camped overnight more than once or twice,” said Capt. Jaymi Black. “We’ve learned tons of different things that I would never even think that I would learn in the Air Force and I know it’s going to help me in my future job.”

“This is the first time wearing snowshoes,” said 1st Lt., Tim Turner. “I think the most snow I’ve ever seen before this was six inches so this is different.”

Over the course of their training, recruits will learn how to navigate using their compass and map. This is important for evading enemy pursuit as well as being able to provide coordinates to rescue crews.

Students also learn how to build a fire and shelter using the basic tools they carry with them.

“When you build a fire, the work part of it warms you up,” said Sanchez. “So we try to teach them the faster you work the more healthy [they will be] and those warm conditions you will be at.”

Throughout the course of training, recruits will also learn how to relay their exact location to a helicopter pilot.

Students will start by creating signals using a variety of materials including colorful tarps, an American flag, tree branches, and by writing in the snow.

Building the signals can be hard work because recruits must hike to a peak high enough to be spotted.

“It needs to be challenging for them,” said Sanchez. “We need to see the high peaks, the low peaks, and the steep terrain. All of that needs to be trained for them so ideally, this is a good spot for them.”

“We walked a lot farther than I thought we were going to walk,” said Turner. “A lot of up and down. We eventually got to camp pretty late and we had to dig through all this snow. It was a lot of work.”

Once a signal is built, recruits will use a radio to give the helicopter pilot their coordinates using a compass.

“I haven’t really had training like this before and I’m not used to situations like this,” said A1C, David Anderson. “I think it’s setting me up for a good future.”

By the fifth day, instructors will leave recruits who must evade capture and get rescued.

The training is difficult, but students who make it through prove they can survive in any situation.

“We feel like we fail a student if we don’t teach them everything we have,” said Sanchez. “All the training we go through to make sure someone can survive and ultimately make it back home to our families.”

Rep. Bustos talks to veterans in effort to improve VA services

MOLINE — After serving in the Vietnam War as a medical corps man, U.S. Army veteran Clayton Peterson suffered the effects of Agent Orange — the powerful herbicide used by U.S. troops to wipe out thick stands of forest and foliage used by enemy troops as cover.

Mr. Peterson credits the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) clinics for saving his life.

"I am 100 percent disabled. I owe my diabetes, my heart (problems), and my prostate cancer, all to Agent Orange," Mr. Peterson said. "I feel good about life, everything is OK. The VA has been my lifesaver. I did not know I had a heart problem until I went for a regular exam. The cardiologist said I would have a heart attack soon."

But with limited medical service and choice of physicians, Mr. Peterson relied on his private medical insurance as a retired U.S. postal worker to expand his coverage.

"I wanted to be able to choose my cardiologist, rather than go to one of the only places the VA does open heart surgery," Mr. Peterson said. "Certain illnesses have to go to certain hospitals. The Iowa City clinic does kidney transplants; the burn units are in Texas. I chose a doctor out of Loyola University because my insurance would pay for it. But the VA discovered (the problem.)"

Mr. Peterson said he will begin radiation treatments for his cancer next month, again using a private doctor.

"I like to stay local, and I like to choose my doctors," he said.

In her ongoing effort to assist America’s active-duty service members and veterans, Rep. Bustos makes it a point to visit with those who have served and find ways to make the system better.

On the eve of Memorial Day weekend, Rep. Bustos met with seven local veterans Friday morning in a roundtable discussion at Western Illinois University Quad-Cities campus in Moline.

"Almost every piece of legislation I write is based on what we learn at home," Rep. Bustos said. "That’s why it’s so important when I’m not out in Washington, that I’m talking to people who can share their hopes and dreams with me and we can address some things legislatively.

"These are people who have lived through Vietnam, the Iraq War — who deal with the VA as a regular part of their lives. I want to know from them what is working and what is not working."

Joining Rep. Bustos and Mr. Peterson in the discussion were U.S. Army veterans Matt O’Brien, Barbara Sennett, Joe Ramos, Charlene Griffin; Air Force veteran Zach Almquist; and Marine reserve veteran Mike Malmstrom.

To address concerns like those of Mr. Peterson’s, Rep. Bustos supported the VA Mission Act of 2018, which will expand private health care coverage to nine million veterans. As a result, veterans will be able to access care in their own communities, and improve scheduling for appointments outside of the VA health care system.

Rep. Bustos also has supported the issuance of veteran ID cards, making it easier for veterans to verify their military service.

"As a result of this long war we’ve had, there are more veterans requiring treatment. This war has put more stress on the system," Ms. Griffin said. "There are more retirements. We have more people out there who are eligible for veteran’s benefits without the money being put in to support them."

Rep. Bustos said she was told wait times for psychiatric patients were too long across the country.

No. 22 Virginia women’s tennis beats No. 28 Wake Forest

Ingram Publishing

The No. 28 Wake Forest women’s tennis team came up short as No. 22 Virginia defeated the Demon Deacons on Sunday afternoon 5-2 in the team’s regular season finale in Charlottesville, Va.

The Demon Deacons (17-12, 5-9 ACC) came out in a strong start with a solid doubles performance in their second-consecutive match. In doubles, Emma Davis and Chandler Carter pushed Wake Forest ahead with a 6-3 win over Virginia’s No. 16 ranked pair of Rosie Johanson and Meghan Kelley.

The Cavaliers (15-7, 9-5 ACC) then answered with a win at No. 2 with Kelley defeating Eliza Omirou 6-4, 6-3. Anna Ulyashchenko and Courtney Meredith clinched the opening doubles point at No. 3, with the Demon Deacons by winning a tiebreaker.

Wake Forest began widening its lead to 2-0 once Davis picked up a win in No. 1 singles when Johanson retired following the first set.

But Virginia gained momentum by taking the first set in five out of six matches. The Cavaliers picked up their first win from Teodora Radosavljevic at the No. 5 singles match to cut their deficit to 2-1.

Virginia rod the momentum as the Cavaliers won at No. 3 and No. 2 in straight-sets to take a 3-2 lead in the match.

Wake Forest will compete in the ACC Women’s Tennis Championship in Cary on Wednesday. The Demon Deacons are set to play at 11:30 a.m. as the No. 11 seed, taking on No. 14 Notre Dame.
