My drums and drumming world

"AmbA DextrO" is my play on the word ambidextrous. I have centered my setup around a cable hi hat that is in front of my snare drum.

My toms are also in a mirrored position. The left side drum sizes are the same size as the right side drums. This way I stay in the center while playing. The right hand stays primarily on the right side and the left hand stays on the left side.

Watch the videos to see exactly how this looks.

Welcome.

Although I stay in the middle of my kit, this is not the rule...which leads to much experimentation and fun.

AmbA DextrO has also help to develop my left side much more than a traditional setup.

I find myself more and more leading with the left hand...and finding it natural and comfortable.

While playing "AmbA DextrO," my right and left hand stay mostly on their perspective sides but not as a rule.

I play both matched and traditional.

This type of set up encourages me to play in an "open" way. With toms, a ride cymbal and symmetrically positioned crash cymbals on my left side so accessible, my left hand becomes "free." This setup also helps me to play and experiment with the left side leading...or in an ambidextrous way~

The basic idea was to place a cable hi-hat in front of my snare drum and then I experimented with my remaining equipment...centered around the cable hi-hat.

Here are the specifics of my GEAR.

Purpose of ambidextro.com...

With ambadextro.com I can share with other drummers the journey I am going through in applying this concept to my existing style of play.

Trying to play in an ambidextrous way will be a life's work...some of the surprise grooves and fills that pop up as a result of my left side "sneaking" in now and then are making the effort well worth it...and most importantly...fun!

With this site I hope to share with other drummers what I am learning. Thoughts and exercises that are helping me to develop ambidextrous playing.
My thoughts on studio concepts, the music industry, ideology on practice and other topics, will also be shared on this site.
